Actress and activist Somy Ali recently shared a personal and nostalgic moment from her film career, revealing the emotional reason behind her decision to sign the 1997 film Chupp. The film, a remake of the 1989 Kannada thriller Tarka, held special significance for her—not just professionally, but personally as well.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Somy opened up about how the project resonated deeply with her because it was connected to her childhood crush, Bollywood’s original superstar, Rajesh Khanna. Reflecting on her early admiration, she called him her “seven-year-old and to date biggest crush,” and said that being part of a film inspired by him was truly meaningful.

“It’s #tbt baby! A privilege would be an understatement to have worked with @wadhawan.avinash, Jeetu ji and the magnificent Late Om Puri ji,” she wrote in her post. “Aside from the three reasons, I signed this film as it was a remake of my seven-year-old and to date biggest crush in the world! Kakaji AKA Rajesh Khanna. I couldn’t think of a better way to be Chupp and head back home to America, but not be ‘Chupp’ in real life.”

Ali also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share the screen with veteran actors Jeetendra, Avinash Wadhawan, and the late Om Puri. She posted a throwback video from the film, describing the experience as an honor and a privilege.

Directed by Ambrish Sangal, Chupp was a suspense thriller that featured a stellar ensemble cast including Jeetendra, Om Puri, Somy Ali, and Avinash Wadhawan. The film was a Hindi adaptation of Tarka, which itself was based on Agatha Christie’s classic play The Unexpected Guest.

Somy Ali, who appeared in several notable films in the 1990s including Anth (1994), Yaar Gaddar (1994), and Andolan (1995), now devotes much of her time to activism. But her recent reflection highlights the deep emotional connections actors often have with their work—and the lasting influence of cinematic icons like Rajesh Khanna.
